User Experience Starts With Installer Icons

User experience is an all round product. It is much more than the logo on your site or the way your application works. I was given a reminder of this when Flock 1.0 Beta was released a couple of days ago. As a long time user of the browser, I downloaded and installed it. My other main browser, Opera was also updated and I had to download the installer file. What struck me was the difference in appearance of these installer icons.icons.jpg

I am not sure if the reason why the Opera installer icon did not look like it’s logo but I do know that the Flock icon definitely adds value to the experience of installing Flock. It just makes it slightly more appealing to click on the icon and install the browser.

Good point Peter… I think too many companies overlook these seemingly ‘small things’ in their products. User experience should be from start till end, no interruptions.

Dr. Pete Says:

I can’t believe how much software still relies on digging through a readme.txt file and finding some buried executable or unpacking an archived source file. Especially for demos or companies selling software-as-a-service, you can’t afford to alienate your users before they’ve even installed your product.
