Safari, Opera and Google Calendar

Safari has been released for Windows and obviously I downloaded it to test it out. I was astounded to see that Safari seems to work perfectly well on Google Calendar. I could have known this if I would have gone to this page containing detailed information on which browsers are supported by Google Calendar but seeing is believing.

But, nonetheless, I am kind of curious why a browser that has a bigger (albeit 0.1%) market share and a bigger platform (Linux, OSX and Windows) is not supported and Safari (until recently Mac only) and with a smaller market share is. Besides that, Opera seems to be very strict when it comes to web standards, after all HÃ¥kon Wium Lie, one of the inventors of CSS, is the CTO at Opera.

I suppose their is a reason for this but I still find it kind of strange.

Daniel Goldman Says:

Just a quick correction, we have close to 1% of the market share (depending on which figure you look at), not %0.1.

As for supporting standards, although we try to support web standards where possible, we still put a lot of emphasis on what is commonly called ‘street HTML’ (i.e. broken code). Having said that, we do work with Google and others in helping them with Opera support.

Thanks for the comment Daniel, I was referring to the difference between the market share of Safari vs Opera (which is why I found it strange that Opera, the better browser in my opinion, isn’t supported 100% and Safari is). I stand corrected, I should have worded my sentence better.

I think it has to do with Safari being the default browser for Macs. Most people won’t even bother to try any others on the Macintosh.
